The Foundation for Conductive Education

An overview of Conductive Education

The future

For the future the conductive movement hopes that, at a time when existing approaches to special education and rehabilitation are under criticism from both inside and outside the existing system, its own experience offers useful alternative models, including:
  1. a more positive and creative understanding of the potential of disabled people;
  2. a life-span cognitive-education system, already up and running, to realise this;
  3. with at its heart an explicit and confident pedagogic;
  4. leading to a deep and fundamental shift on the parent-professional relationship; and
  5. the real ‘choice’ of an alternative philosophy.
In the meantime, the conductive movement remains relatively small and to no small measure ‘underground', or at least in most places on the margins, with a tradition of attracting more attention than its size might appear to deserve. It remains driven largely by parental dissatisfaction with current arrangements and by their aspirations for a positive alternative, neither of which are likely to diminish over a foreseeable future. It is still largely staffed by conductors trained originally in Hungary, In some places some of these are becoming naturalised citizens of their new countries, their numbers now being supplemented by those trained outside Hungary.

Though Conductive Education will certainly continue to evolve to meet the evolving social circumstances of its new contexts, it looks like conductive pedagogy is here to stay.
