Cerebral palsy
Conductive Education is an educational approach to cerebral palsy which helps individuals develop the skills and motivation they need to overcome problems of movement and bodily control they encounter in everyday living.

As the person with cerebral palsy reaches adulthood they may find it more difficult to use their bodies in the way they did when they were younger. Confusion and anger may also set in as the individual becomes increasingly frustrated with their body and its limitations.

"I have found it a very worthwhile experience and a good investment of time. Conductive Education is extremely positive about CP and as a result I am greatly encouraged as to my own future"

The practitioners in our service, specialist educators called conductors, work closely with participants enabling them to find new ways of controlling their bodies to achieve greater independence.

Many of our participants speak of the increased confidence and self-assurance they gain from taking an active part in finding solutions to the problems they face in everyday living.

This renewed confidence in their abilities enables them to lead more active and independent lives.

How can Conductive Education help?
As we mature our priorities in life change. A person with cerebral palsy is no different. Conductive Education provides a lifelong system of learning for the person with cerebral palsy.

Whatever your age we can help you to make full use of your present abilities and build on them to improve your quality of life.

Conductors possess a detailed understanding of how cerebral palsy affects everyday living. Your personal aims will be set in discussion with the conductors. Conductors then work with you to find ways of overcoming the problems you face in a range of personal and social situations which are of importance to you.

Throughout you will be encouraged to use the skills you have in the most efficient way and to remain as active as possible to reduce the possibility of physical damage. Advice is given on how to use your equipment and aids to enhance your skills and assist in moving towards independence.

Your personal set of goals will be worked towards within a balanced programme which covers all areas of motor skill including speech and breathing. Particular emphasis is placed on:
  1. helping you to increase the range and control of your movement skills.
  2. tasks to improve awareness of your body and enhance posture and coordination.
  3. developing techniques to increase your level of skill in everyday activities such as getting out of bed, dressing and feeding yourself, moving around the house.
  4. breathing tasks to reduce spasticity and improve circulation and general well-being.
  5. developing your use of rhythm to help you gain greater control over problems such as ataxia, spasticity, and involuntary movements.
  6. teach your family and/or your carer ways of helping you build on your skills.

What can I expect to gain?
  1. increased confidence in your own abilities.
  2. increase in level of independence.
  3. improvements in bodily control and mobility.
  4. increase in stamina.
  5. improved quality of life

Jacqueline's Story

Jacqueline did not discover she had cerebral palsy until she was 25 years old. Up until that point, she had been told her physical problems were caused by clubfoot.
