Parkinson's

For Vince, living with Parkinson’s disease makes every step an effort. He finds the strength to take these steps through the motivation and support he finds at the National Institute of Conductive Education (NICE).

Vince

“I have had Parkinson’s disease since 1964. I worked for British Leyland at the time and managed to keep working until 1976. I began coming to the Institute when adult services first began in 1990. I still attend one day a week because it has definitely given me a better quality of life.

"Conductive Education gives me a lot more control over my body. Before I started coming to NICE I had to wear ankle boots to help with my balance but I still fell over quite a lot. Since coming to NICE I can wear ordinary shoes and don’t fall over anywhere near as much.

"The progressive nature of Parkinson’s has gradually made it more difficult for me to walk, but I am still mobile and I think I owe this to the sessions at NICE.

"It is Conductive Education that has kept me stable, without it I would probably be in a wheelchair by now.

"Having Parkinson’s also affected my hand movement and speech quite severely. Thanks to Conductive Education, I have regained control of these and can now enjoy nights out at the social club, playing cards and chatting to friends.

"I used to dream of a cure for Parkinson’s disease. Of course it would still be nice, but I don’t think about a cure anymore, the conductors have helped me to look to the future. I feel lucky to be able to come here, I only wish more people could benefit."
