Head Injury

Education is an educational approach to head injuries which helps individuals develop the skills and motivation they need to overcome problems of movement and bodily control they encounter in everyday living.

Head Injury

"I have achieved a lot more than I could possibly have hoped to see…It has assisted me to move myself and position any part or my whole body comfortably"

The practitioners in our service, specialist educators called conductors, work closely with participants enabling them to re-learn skills that have been lost or discover new ways of achieving them.

Many of our participants speak of the increased confidence and self-assurance they gain from taking an active part in finding solutions to the problems they face in everyday living. This renewed confidence in their abilities enables them to lead more active and independent lives.

How can Conductive Education help
Our approach to recovery from head injury is to see it as a learning process - a re-learning of skills necessary for that particular individual.

You may have had a traumatic head injury or you may have just finished a period of intensive medical rehabilitation and be feeling alone and unsure of what the future may hold.

Whatever stage you are at with the condition we can help you to make full use of your present abilities and build on them to improve your quality of life.

Conductors possess a detailed understanding of how head injuries affect everyday living. Your personal aims will be set in discussion with the conductors. Conductors then work with you to find new and different ways of overcoming the problems you face in a range of personal and social situations which are of importance to you.

Depending on your needs, attention is aimed at overcoming loss of mobility and control, sensory and communication difficulties as well as any behavioural and attention problems. Head injury, by its sudden nature, can have an enormous and immediate impact on family life. Advice and support can be given to help the whole family.

Your personal set of goals will be worked towards within a balanced programme which covers all areas of motor skill including speech and breathing.

Particular emphasis is placed on:
  1. maintaining and/or increasing the range and control of your movement skills.
  2. tasks to improve awareness of your body and enhance posture and coordination.
  3. breathing tasks to reduce spasticity, increase fluency of speech and improve lung capacity.
  4. developing your use of rhythm to help you gain greater control over involuntary movements and ataxia.
  5. activities to enhance expressive and receptive language skills.
  6. teach your family and/or your carer ways of helping you build on your skills.
  7. providing advice on using aids and equipment to enhance skills and assist in moving towards independence.

What can I expect to gain?
  1. increased confidence in your own abilities.
  2. increase in level of independence.
  3. improvements in bodily control and mobility.
  4. increase in stamina.
  5. improved quality of life.
