Sessional Placements for Children (7-17)

The National Institute of Conductive Education offers sessional placements for 7 to 17 year olds with motor disorders. These are children and young people who may or may not have experienced Conductive Education before.

Conductors work with children and young people who have movement disorders such as cerebral palsy and acquired head injury.

The aims

The service aims to introduce and develop participants’ basic motor skills and the daily life skills they need to achieve greater independence in everyday activities.

Specific aims include:
  • increased independence in daily activities such as dressing, eating and toileting.
  • body awareness and skills to manage the transition from childhood to adolescence.
  • teaching the young person about basic movements and how the body works.
  • developing skills to assist in both school and home.

Each programme is developed according to the age-group and the specific needs of each participant identified at initial consultation. Visits to the young person’s local school can be arranged and conductors are able to liaise with other professionals responsible for the young person.

Parents and families will, in all cases, have ample opportunities to observe the work, take part in sessions and have discussions with conductors. Written information will be given to all families at regular intervals.

This will include specific advice on the implementation and development of the areas of skill covered in the course within the home and school. Recommendations will also be made for future provision.

Attendance

A wide range of provision is available depending on the needs of the young person, distance travelled and educational commitments. Weekly groups are held for those young people who live locally. In addition, a number of specialised courses of varying length are offered at specified times during the year. Further information on these is available on request or at initial consultation.

Children and young people usually attend in groups of three or more with other young people who have similar difficulties. In some instances the younger child may wish to work alongside their parents, However, the older child and young person usually opt to join a group. Individual sessions may be preferred or recommended as a pre-requisite to group work. Discussion on the most appropriate form of provision takes place at initial consultation.
