Stroke

Conductive Education is an educational approach to strokes which helps individuals develop the skills and motivation they need to overcome problems of movement and bodily control they encounter in everyday living.

Stroke Session

"I need a lot of motivation to get me going. The programme made me believe in myself that I will be able to achieve more in my daily activities."

"The last three weeks I have seen a change in him and some hope in his eyes. As his wife I am very grateful for those weeks spent with you because I also have hope."

The practitioners in our service, specialist educators called conductors, work closely with participants enabling them to re-learn skills that have been lost or discover new ways of achieving them.

Many of our participants speak of the increased confidence and self-assurance they gain from taking an active part in finding solutions to the problems they face in everyday living. This renewed confidence in their abilities enables them to lead more active and independent lives.

How can Conductive Education help

Our approach to the recovery from stroke is to see it as a learning process - a re-learning of skills necessary for that particular individual.

You may have just had a stroke or you may have just finished a period of intensive medical rehabilitation and be feeling alone and unsure of what the future may hold.

Whatever stage you are at with the condition we can help you to maintain and/or increase the range and control of your movement skills.

Conductors possess a detailed understanding of how strokes affect everyday living. Your personal aims will be set in discussion with the conductors. Conductors then work with you to find new and different ways of overcoming the problems you face in a range of personal and social situations which are of importance to you.

Conductors can help you to recover as much movement as possible on your affected side and help you use this efficiently within your everyday life.

Specific sessions are run for people with physical difficulties whose speech, memory and/or language have also been affected by their stroke.

Your personal set of goals will be worked towards within a balanced programme which covers all areas of motor skill including speech and breathing.

Particular emphasis is placed on:
  1. tasks to improve awareness of your body.
  2. tasks to enhance coordination and prevent dependency on your unaffected side.
  3. tasks to enhance balance and control.
  4. learning how to compensate for sensory loss.
  5. breathing techniques to enhance speech, circulation and general well-being.
  6. developing your use of rhythm to help you fully utilise your movements.
  7. activities to increase expressive and receptive language skills.

What can I expect to gain?

  1. increased confidence in your own abilities.
  2. increase in level of independence.
  3. improvements in bodily control and mobility.
  4. increased participation in everyday activities.
  5. improved quality of life.
