True Life Stories

Meet Nick and his mother Lucy

Nick's mother Lucy

"I have been involved with NICE for four years through my job with Zurich Community Trust. During this time I have been constantly humbled and inspired by the fantastic work done by the conductors.

When my mum, Lucy, developed Parkinson's I felt sure that NICE would be able to help her. After a fair bit of nagging I managed to persuade her to travel from Liverpool for a consultation. I found out later that my mum still wasn't convinced though as before the consultation she told Fiona Walker "I'm only doing this to keep Nick happy!". Anybody who has ever met Melanie Brown, Director & Senior Conductor at the Foundation, will know what an inspirational character she is!

An hour later mum had changed her tune completely and couldn't wait to get started with her two week intensive course, despite the fact it would entail travelling from Liverpool.

She thoroughly enjoyed the classes and found them very beneficial which is explained better in her own words".

Nick Hoyle, Zurich Community Trust

"I thought back to a few months prior to taking the two week course when an acquaintance, unaware that I had Parkinson’s, had told me that she had never seen me look so miserable. I didn't feel miserable, but my face was beginning to get the "Parkinson mask" and even though I tried to smile it was a very false smile. Thank you Aggi and all your team for teaching me facial exercises and giving me my face back.

In two short weeks you taught me how to walk properly "swing your arms, right, left, stretch your fingers" how to get up and sit down on a chair easily, simple exercises to keep Parkinson’s at bay and you gave me the confidence to walk down stairs without clutching desperately at the banister. How was I able to do these things? Because Aggi and her team told me that I could and you don't argue with Aggi!"
