“In order to succeed, we must first believe that we can.”– Nikos Kazantzakis
Many people with long term neurological problems do not receive regular therapy or support. Frequently help is only offered at times of crisis. We do not believe that people should reach this point before getting help so we provide long term services for everyone with a long term condition.
All sessions are focussed around the main symptoms for each diagnosis. Small groups of people with the same or similar diagnosis (max. 6 people) work together with the conductors to learn new strategies for movement. These often lead to an increased confidence and a renewed hope for the future.
Conductors believe that there is a strong link between how we feel and how we move. By teaching techniques and showing the person what they can achieve we are able to lift mood and depression which in turn help the person become more active in their daily life.
All services start with free weekly input for between 10 sessions (for people living outside of the City of Birmingham) and 18 sessions (for those within the City). After this participants may continue to attend weekly or move to fortnightly or monthly sessions. We do not discharge people from our services as we believe that we should be there for as long as someone needs us and is finding benefit from our services. Progress is discussed regularly so that each individual can monitor their development and learning and find out if the services continue to be of benefit.
In addition to direct services we also recognise the need to support the whole family and we can provide advice, workshops and discussions with family members and carers. This is available on a one-to-one basis or as a part of a group workshop.
